COURSE PREFACE

The Utility Locating/Damage Prevention course is an advanced technical training module designed and developed to offer basic cable locating skills with a variety of locating equipment.

Students are trained and equipped with the knowledge and skill to detect and accurately mark all buried utility pipes and cables in order to prevent damages during excavating activities.

The course is taught in a live environment (no simulated environments). This process of real world training applications will enhance and build greater student confidence and retention.

 

OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES  

Upon completion of this course the trainee will be able to demonstrate locating skills within the following problem area environments:
 
  • Congested areas
  • Abandoned facilities
  • Encapsulated plant
  • Butt splices, loops and laterals
  • Conduit runs
  • Express cable routes
  • Lead sheath cables
  • Open or damaged tracer wires
  • Fiber Optic cables
  • Power primaries
  • Steel gas valves
  • Conductive water lines
  • Non-metallic sewer lines
Also understand the principles and applications of the following work functions:
 
  • Manhole safety
  • Plat reading/atlas maps
  • Multi-frequency active and passive
  • Importance of depth
  • Dangers of peak and null antennas
  • Sweeping techniques
  • Markings/offsets
  • Job planning and focus
  • Contractor/excavator relationships
